Horizon2020 for research and innovation
Does your organization engage in international research, technological development and innovation? If so, the Horizon2020 program is of interest to you.
Horizon2020 is the European subsidy program for research and innovation in Europe. The program aims to stimulate innovation which enhances Europe’s overall competitiveness. Approximately €80 billion has been made available for the period 2014- 2020.
Who is the Horizon2020 program for?
What are the objectives?
- Excellent Science: Top-level science
The first pillar is to support excellent scientific research. Two objectives of this are a good European competitive position in knowledge and innovation and for Europe to remain at the forefront of science.
- Industrial leadership: Industrial leadership
Industrial Leadership is about stimulating industrial innovation. The objectives of this pillar are to promote technological progress in industry in the broad sense and to make Europe attractive for investment in research and innovation
- Societal challenges: Societal challenges
The final pillar is to challenge science and industry to develop solutions to major societal challenges. The challenges are in the areas of: health and well-being, demography, food safety and sustainability, sustainable energy, sustainable transport and road safety, climate, or safe society.
How much is the subsidy?
The amount of the subsidy depends on the type of project. The subsidy consists of a reimbursement of the costs incurred. In many cases, this is a full reimbursement (100%) or a reimbursement of part of the costs incurred (usually 70%).
What are the conditions?
A grant application can only be submitted digitally via the Horizon 2020 participants portal. Before submitting an application, your organization must first be registered in the portal. In addition, the conditions for each project are published in the ‘calls for proposals’. This is a call for submitting a grant application. The call not only indicates the type of project, but also what the assessment criteria and any additional formal requirements of an application are.
When is the deadline?
Each call has an opening date and a closing date. The subsidy application must be submitted within this period. Applications submitted after the closing date of a call will not be processed.
In connection with coronavirus, the European Commission has extended almost all Horizon 2020 calls with deadlines until April 15, 2020. In addition, €47.5 million has been made available for research into coronavirus.
