Sustainability of the energy sector

Let’s start with making the energy sector more sustainable. The national government strives to achieve their goal of no greenhouse gas emissions (e.g. CO2) by 2050. Therefore, the use of renewable energy and environmentally friendly business assets are strongly encouraged, as are projects that lead to renewable energy. The Dutch government encourages this by awarding subsidies to companies that operate sustainably. The Energy Top Sector has an annual budget of approximately €130 million for energy innovations.

When is a company sustainable?

A company achieves a level of sustainability in many ways. For example by recycling, paying attention to energy consumption, arranging transport differently, purchasing locally and, for example, following “the new way of working”. This all contributes to sustainable entrepreneurship.

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)

Corporate social responsibility (CSR) and sustainable entrepreneurship are often used interchangeably. CSR is about entrepreneurship from social principles while sustainable entrepreneurship is about entrepreneurship based on ecological principles. Ultimately, it is all about companies taking into account the effects their business operations have on people, the environment, and society.

Innovation and sustainable entrepreneurship

Nowadays, innovation and sustainable entrepreneurship go hand in hand. It is not without reason that innovative companies are the forerunners in the field of sustainability. After all, sustainable business is not only good for the environment; it is cost effective and it also contributes to a green image for your company.

Greenwashing

This green image seems to be increasingly important for companies. Nevertheless, it is important not to shout too loudly about how sustainable a company is. Presenting a company greener than it actually is is called “greenwashing”. This has the opposite effect. It damages a company’s image.
